We do have some French listeners over here on the Affinity Ascension network, but for those who are not, be sure to tune in closely to the lofty presence the vocals grace upon the audience. In particular, it is these such vocals that drive this track to utter greatness. In essence, “Etranger À Demeure” is beyond magnificent, it is poetic justice at its finest.
As we swim further into this heavenly piece, we are entranced by sharp yet entrancing violin constructions blended with super sound drums. The drums within “Etranger À Demeure” are delicate and pungent all at the same time; such a feat is truly remarkable. What’s so wondrous about this production is that the elements that went into the work aren’t numerous in count, yet there is such a substantial presence throughout. At the same time, when taking into consideration all the individual components, the audience can start to fully actualize the brilliance within the ballad.
We were fortunate enough to be in discussion with Bruno Bisaro himself about how he was able to synthesize such a beautiful work of art within this collaborative effort he recently took on. If you would like some background behind the producers and the thought process that went into developing “Etranger À Demeure”, be sure to take a peep at the synopsis following this in depth review. Press Release (French to English Translation):
LGBT activist, Bruno Bisaro is also a multidisciplinary artist from the Parisian scene. As a singer and songwriter, Bruno Bisaro is releasing his second album « Bruno Bisaro & Les Ouragans Gris ». A singular figure in today's musical landscape, an assumed representative of alternative french speaking culture, Bruno Bisaro is proposing a "musical novel" where traditional or contemporary inspired songs rub shoulders... After Beaujeu (released in 2013), Bruno Bisaro's second album is a new musical and literary experience, born from a collaboration with Julien Vonarb, director and arranger of the album. Bruno Bisaro & Les Ouragans Gris is both the title of the album and a collective signature with multiple influences.
A Musical Novel:
If the song is at the heart of the artistic proposal, in traditional variations or more current and contemporary inspiration, other aesthetics rub shoulders in this new album : spoken word, sound poetry, protest theatre... Bruno Bisaro is paying tribute to his friend Alain Moisset (singer of the punk-rock band Via Viva in the 80s, director of his first album and fellow traveler) but also to the missing friends, and to those who recently disappeared… His voice is sometimes supplanted by other voices, such as that of the songwriter Phil Ochs. Melancholy singing accompanied by a gypsy violin is followed by a folk-rock ballad, a pop music chorus...
From avant-garde culture to pop culture
Actors Frédéric Cuif and Charlotte Costes-Debure are interpreting the spoken lyrics, with any accents darker than the sung lyrics, like so many occasional poems, in the place of Bruno Bisaro himself. They become, in a way, the true narrators of this musical novel. As in an epic, the song is above all that of the places crossed (Marseille, Vitry, Venezia, Europe...) and that of the places of the dream. It is addressed to the met characters ("Marie" to name but one and who gives its title to one of the songs that open the album) as it is addressed to oneself... Julien Vonarb's orchestration allows the "novel" to exist in all its fullness, offering the singer and to his musicians the opportunity to reinvent themselves, chapter after chapter. The novel is metamorphosing here and there into jazz music, film music...
